Noise coming from fuel tank

claude2093's picture

Hi everyone,

I just purchased the bike 2 weeks ago and just love it. I am somehow puzzled by a noise coming from the fuel tank or at least it seems that it is coming from the tank.

I can hear it when I am travelling in first gear and it sounds like loose coins inside the tank that are moving around. The noise is not constant but rather intermittent

Anybody else?

Thanks

Claude

marble in the gas tank?

I have heard the same sound. It does not happen at any particular time. I thought maybe small rock might be flung from tire under fender but it does sound like something inside the fuel tank or just under it. Someday someone might figure it out.

Rattle

If I am understanding you correctly, you have rattle like there is something rolling around inside of your gas tank not the clink that we all experience when hitting a bump. I have heard the same thing thinking it was something in my tank. I have taken my tank off and completely drained it the shook it and it is not the tank. My guess is that every so often a small rock may get tossed up under the tank lip and roll to the back and fall out. This is only speculation on my part though. If anyone has another hypothesis as to what this might be I am all ears.

Enjoy life - You only get one chance at it.

Indeed

I've got the same sound. Looks like small ball inside of a gas tank.. At first I tries to find out the source.. but later my throughts of it just simple - my RedStar just wants to roll more )

I wonder...

if they use steel shot at the factory for getting rid of the rust and dirt after welding the tank, and they didn't get them all out? Wouldn't hurt anything to have a ball or two rolling around in there.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one with a clunk sound in the front end. Have had my 1300 about 2 weeks and less than 400 miles. I notice the clunk when I run over a sharp bump or railroad track. It seams to make the noise when the frount forks are being compressed, not extending. I will check out the covers in frount of the tank but it sounds more metallic than plastic.

Same Noise

I have the same "clunk" sound when hitting a bump at speed.

If we are voting... I am a no. I have not heard anything like that. Little help, but I can't think of what it would be. I am at approx. 900+ miles.

G'day Claude , Yeah there

G'day Claude , Yeah there has been a lot of owners with a noise around the tank area , with mine ( and others ) it was when I went over a bump with a sharp drop off , I would hear a metallic clunk but not all the time , so I went lookin' , and ended up finding the noise came from the plastic 2 piece neck cover , ( this cover is loose on all bikes I have looked at ) I stuffed a rag under the cover to force it up and force the wiring and cables down , that was about 2 weeks ago and havn't heard the clunk since , so I'm hoping its solved , but will keep an ear out ..............also ....welcome mate ....Steve

Not to sound to stupid, but

Not to sound to stupid, but what is a "neck cover?"

Yamaha calls em frame inserts... between gas tank and steering head each side.... stock just black plastic.

really? the neck cover?

I had come to the conclusion it was the front shocks themsleves making the clunk & was going to make a point of it when the bike goes in for its 1000 miles check. Now I am curious & will have to check out the neck covers. But why would the plastic covers make such a loud bang. My noise sounds like a hammer striking a large solid metal object. Wonder what would happen if you removed those neck covers, would the noise disappear?

You are correct.

There is some possibility that there is a different sound being discussed here, but more than likely this is the same front shock noise discussed in several earlier posts. I have the same shock "clunk" when I hit a sharp bump. I plan to replace the front springs with progressive springs as soon as I return from this trip to Arkansas. Others have spoken highly of the progressive springs and there is no comparison in quality of the springs. There have been photos of the progressive vs. stock springs posted on this site as well.

Fair winds~
