I got 10,000 out of the stock rear Dunlop and the front could have gone another 5-10K but I decided to change both at the same time. Went with the Metzler 880 and and I'm so glad I did. Great handling tires.
Sonny
How are you guys getting 10K out of the rear tire? Do you guys ride in more areas that are lower speed or have fewer twisties around? I quite often ride out into the desert on lonely roads where you can really open 'er up for miles and miles without seeing a radar gun ;-) My Bridgestone is at the wear bars at 6300 miles. I do live in the desert, and the long, hot summers are hard on everything automotive related. I am tempted to throw another 'stone on because they are so cheap at my stealer right now...$106 for the rear.
I live in the desert (Palm Springs area); just turned 7000 miles today - no wear bars yet! Two weeks ago I purchased an ME880, mindful of the backorder problems. I have it stored in my guest bedroom closet, ready to go! The Mrs. hasn't found it yet.
My 2 new replacement metzlers will arrive from Shane tomorrow afternoon UPS. Can't wait to get them mounted on, and rollin'!!!
(don't have to hide mine tho.........................
Metzeler Marathon 880E - installed end of April, 2008
180/70R-16 Radial rear
130/90-16 bias front
Exceptional handling & tracking! Plus, the larger rear tire cuts in half the Yammy-induced speedometer error. If I could go back and do it all over again...without a doubt, these same Metzeler tires.
my rear stock dunlop was almost bald @ 9,000 miles (I got the bike used w/4000 miles on it).
Anyway, replaced it (stupidly), with another dunlop. I"ve got maybe 2,000 miles on it, and it's looking worn as hell. Next time it will get a pair of metzlers for sure. (at least they're substantially cheaper then those 'yamaha only' dunlop beyotches........:>(
I don't know if I should vote here? The Bridgestone was at the cross bars or wear bars at 6280 miles. Today I'm almost at 9100 miles.
I went to the Darkside and replaced it with a 195/60 16" Dunlop SP Sport ulta high performance car tire. Thats right a car tire.
I ride as much as possible, mostly straight up highway, its 110 miles to round trip to work and I ride as much as I can. I'm hoping to total 20,000 miles or more this year on the 1300.
This tire loves gravel, rainy roads, and the traction I get in stopping. That said this tire is not for everyone. The down side to the darkside, is that under 30 mph the tire wants to follow any imprefection in the road. Going into a curve you have push the handle bars down, the tire wants to stand up. But it holds the curve and road great for me. I can drag the floor boards and give it as much power as i need, the DS tire is softer than a M/C tire, and the raidal tire flex's as much as needed, there is more contact of rubber on the road. So far I'm very pleased with it and will problibly mount another when this one wears out at 20 or 30,000+ miles. This isn't a cheap tire its $166 msrp. $113 at tire rack .com
I bought 4 of them on Ebay.
So should my vote count? as a Dunlop? or other?
Just my 2 cents.

Life is short, make the best of what you have and enjoy it.
Damn right your vote counts! If you have traction to drag the floorboards, (the limiting factor in cornering a 1300), then the tire is worthy! Thanks for the post!
I got 8000 miles, got a nail in it, but wear dots were almost smooth so decided to put new bridgestone because of the cost of tires and amount of wear, 130 ver 185 dollar then mounting it. I figure for the dollar i'd stay with bridgestone.
I've replaced my rear tire once with a Dunlop Elite 3 and it seems to be doing quite well. However, I will most likely go with Metzler when I replace the front in another 1000 miles and when it's time for a new rear. A person on the Delphi 1300 forums posted a picture of his Metzler front tire, with 22,000 miles on it. It still looks decent enough to ride for a while longer.
By the time I get back home I will have put over 10,000 miles on my E3 and it's held up real well. I had thought about going with Metzler or Avon but I may stick with the E3. Decisions, decisions.
I am about to change my almost worn out rear tire after about 10,000 miles and at this point I am sticking with the stock bridgestone tire. I wanted to keep the tires as a matched set. The next time that I need tires I will most likely need a front tire as well and at that point will go with metzler. I have always had good performance and wear out of them.
when one buys an internet tire is it difficult to find a dealer who does not snear at mounting it? Surely you are not mounting your own tires! I do my own bicycle tires but I think the rear on Redd might be a little more technically demanding.
Recently Metzler has listed their 880 Marathon 180/70/16 radial as a suitable replacement for the XVS 1300 Tourer. This will be my choice when it comes time for a new tire.

Good Idea
Bedroom closet to hide a tire sounds like a good place to stash the goods:-)

rear tire choices
I am just about to tip 10,000 miles and my rea tire is looking worn in the middle. My 1300 came with the Dunlop tire. I the Bridgestone a better tire?
