Drilling the stock air box.

I've seen several post on drilling the stock air box. Can you guys that did this mod tell me what you gained ?

thanks

Yup - just as I thought - WAAAAYYYYY COOL.

And that's the color of my bike, too.

You convinced me - but, other than looking neat, any word on how it performs?

Whose bike is that? Do they post on this site? I would love to talk to them about the installation of the Hypercharger.

Thanks.

hypercharger

Hey, IslandGuy.

Go to that same site where you saw the bike, then delete everything past the ".com" in the web address. That will take you to his personal web site. There you'll find a link for emailing him. Without a doubt, he's one great guy and I'm sure he will gladly answer any of your questions. If you do this, please tell him Morg says hello. : )

Take care.

Hypercharger

I am giving some serious thought to installing a Kuryakyn Hypercharger. Thunder has an adapter that allows installation of the Hypercharger on the 1300. I have not seen any posts anyplace by 1300 owners who have done this, so I might be the first. I will let you all know when I do it how it works out. One thing I do know - the Hyperchargers look WAAAAYYYYY cool on any bike.

Hypercharger pictures

Here's a picture of a LIQUID SILVER 1300...you know, the "fastest" color...with a hypercharger, just in case you've not seen one, which is probably because they're so doggone blurry due to their incredible speed as they go by:

While this one isn't mine, I also have that awesome LIQUID SILVER color, which is a very special super-double-secret paint formula developed by NASA. : )

Stay well.

Much needed air

I used the wiki pattern as an example and made my own template, 25 holes in front and 25 in rear, plus 10 in the bottom. What a difference that made. I have been riding with this Mod for about a month now and I can tell you that I have increased a couple mpg and its like the bike has a lot more zip to it. It altered the sound a little on the top end, I guess its from getting much more needed air. Thanks to all those that has posted on this topic, you helped make my mind up. Now its on to the project. Its just like owning a classic car, you are never done tinkering with it.

Airbox drilling

I will be doing the holes in the airbox this week, I will use the 70 hole setup. I also have a V Star 1100 would this help that bike also?

huh

I didnt realize how much I was not happy with this bike until I drilled out the airbox. It doesnt have as much top end noise (I dont know if it was sucking too hard or if it was top end I was hearing) and smooth...oh my goodness, yes it is smooth. No more hesitations or surges at light throttle and all around better power. I wish I would have done that when I first bought the bike. Now all I need is one more gear!

I thought I needed to have the throttle bodies synced, but now I am not sure that is going to be needed. Has anyone had them synced and were they really off?

ride or die!

WOW

All I can say is WOW, what a difference. I cut about a 1 1/2" square in the lower portion of the front of the air box, and a 2 1/2" square in back of air box. I placed a heavy duty screen inside to cover the holes. It runs so much smoother and doesn't seem to be working as hard. I have Vance & Hines pipes and I do not have a after market fuel processor. Glad I did it.

AIR BOX

That sounds like the best solution I have heard yet - how did you attach the screen - by using apoxy? Do you have any pics of your modification?
Thanks for the idea!!

Screen

Hello TCD70, I used a bead of black silicone on the inside and outside to attach screen to air box. The screen came from Wal Mart, there is some office supply items that are made from black screen that I cut pieces from. I will try to post some pictures soon.

Kudos

Kudos, Elizabeth! You are leading the way! I've said before, this is a very good setup, and it doesn't need an aftermarket processor.

Air box drilling

I understand how to drill out the stock air box and the benefits of this . However, I have DG hard chrome pipes and no after market cobra fuel management system . Is it safe to drill the box out under these conditions ? It seems most people who are drilling their air boxes are running there stock pipes as well . THANKS Kent

Drilling the stock airbox

Everyone that has completed this modification seems to be impressed with the end result. I intend on doing this as well. I still ma not certain what side of the black airbox I should drill, as there seems to be a varying opinions on this...................right or left......or both.
Either right or left, you will still be able to see the holes drilled..........correct?

i would highly recommend

i would highly recommend that everyone drill out the air box it takes away all that jerking on starts it stops the goulp of air that it needs to start and with enough air coming in it sounds smoother and has a little more zipp to it. all i did was take the air box cover off then removed
the inner box 2 screws at the bottom and 3 screws inside and then take the breather hose off the back i then drilled the sides of the inner box that leads to the air filter i drilled 1/4 " holes in a straight pattern as many as i could it makes a big difference.

Breathing easier

Just got back from a test ride after drilling my airbox. Man, what a difference! Smoothed right out.

I drilled a series of 1/8 in. holes in a square pattern along the back edge (left side if you're looking straight at it)

Definately recommended. If you mess it up it's only about 35 bucks to replace, so go for it.

drilling air box

I just returned from a drive on the Tail of the Dragon ( 318 curves in 11 miles). I only have 900 miles on the bike, but I have noticed the throttle response has gotten a little jerker than it was when it was new. Working these curves it really turned into a pain. The dealer ship can find no problem (naturally). I also have a grinding sound when I pull in the clutch, but they cannot find the problem there either.
But the way I am understanding this is that by drilling the air box, it will help smooth out this throttle jerkiness. Does anyone know why this works? Is there a delay in supplied air? I will be picking up the bike today and that will be the first order of business.
Thanks,

Lanny

jerking

I drilled about 20 quarter inch holes in the airbox. Now most of the low speed jerking is gone.

Airbox Mod

Hiya Munk! Do you have photos or a description of exactly what you did to your airbox? Thanks in advance for the info!

Will R.

no photos

All I did was take off the airbox cover then took a long drill[ about 6in.] and drilled holes around the inside cover. I didnt drill toward the motor. then I drilled a few in the bottom part. There are already a couple small ones down there. Then I drilled two big holes in the tube that the air is supposed to come into in the middel of the air box. You will be able to see the air filter so just get some holes in there so it can breathe. By the way just drilling a few holes wont help much you have to drill about 20 .25 inch holes. Make sure you get all the plastic out of the airbox before you put the filter and cover back on.

drilling air box

I drilled a "bunch" of 3/16 hole in the inside [toward the engine] and rear of my airbox. I can hear the air move when at full throttle, but the biggest advantage is smoother throttle response. I wanted a ThunderAir kit but my son had airbrushed a "STAR" on both left and right covers so I hated to remove them.

Would really like...

Would really like to see some pics. This would make things mo better for me if I can visualize what I'm suppose to do.
Thank's, Jimmyfrog

Where there ever....

....any pictures of this? My engine is really starting to break in nicely. The rumble has increased and by way of a thankyou Id love to give her some more air to breathe. Are we sure there are no other modifications required to compensate for the increased air flow?

Thanks, guys.
Jason

Just drilled...

...out the stock air box. Came out awesome. I used the pattern suggested by the Wiki that Butch suggested, Thanks Butch, and it worked awesome. The engine feels like its working so much less. Acceleration, how easy it lopes along in the middle rpms, and smoothness down low, everything is better. And it looks pretty good if I do say so myself. Ill post pics later tonight or this weekend.

Did you plug in factory inlet...

J brock

Jason, did you plug the factory inlet or leave it open?

I left it open...

Should I have blocked it? I thought the point was to get more air into the engine.

Yes, you're right more air is...

J brock

better but cooler even better. Some folks doing the mod are pluging up the factory inlet as well. I'm not sure if it really makes that much of a difference because the air will be cooler. Cooler air is more dense. When compressed w/fuel makes a bigger Bang! I did the mod, drilled two 2" holes and installed louvers. Looks good and really improved the response and sound. Just trying to see what worked best.

Air box drilling

I want to drill out my air box but I'm still unsure about where to drill. One drilled "Not towards the engine" does that mean all along the sides which I would guess you can see when you look at it. Another drilled "towards the engine" which you would not be able to see. Does anyone have pictures of this mod I would like to see it before I do it.

Thanks,
DTS

airbox drilling

heres a photo of what I did to my airbox, 70 fork side 70 rear tire side. Improvement was quit a difference. I drilled the sides cause if u drill the "back side" or engine side ur still sucking hot air from the engine. The wiki has the pattern but I cut it in half taped 1/2 to 1 side and 1/2 to the other then used a center punch to make the holes. Used a 1/8" drill bit for the holes. http://good-times.webshots.com/album/564006049yqIOMA?vhost=good-times

you cant really

see the holes if you drill around the sides. Dont drill the chrome. Just drill the black part. I never thought to drill toward the engine.

DRILL IT!!

I just did mine, 2 1/4" hole saw on the back and 1 1/2'' on the back, and used a grill from a after market speaker to keep the big bugs and stuff out of the intake. looks pretty good, and got rid of the jerking from the throttle. i have aftermarket pipes and no controller yet. Great idea, the only hole in the intake( a decent sized hole) sucks air right off of the hot motor. not the best design.

Cut it off

I went one step further and cut the front and back completly off at the seam lines leaving the back side in tack to push air up. waiting for K&N to come out with an aftermarket stock replacment.
