HD Lowers Installed

MNeedham73's picture

Picked them up from McHenry Harley-Davidson Saturday morning, modified and installed them Saturday afternoon. The difference is so extreme it's like I'm riding a whole new bike. Not getting beat to death or going deaf anymore! Riding is so much more enjoyable now. :)

texasdmax says that HD Part# 58125-90B works fine with no mods being mentioned and motodan says it doesn't match up...

Texasdmax care to chime in? This seems like *the* route to go, so I wanna get it straight.

Thanks!

What a difference

I installed the HD lowers on Sunday and went for a spin. Unfortunately the wind was blowing 25 - 30MPH so I couldn't really tell. I rode the 24 miles to work this morning with light winds and WOW what a difference. My sunglasses actually stayed on my face. I had tilted the windshield back a couple of weeks back and that made a little difference too.

You guys deserve an ATTA BOY!

Got her done!

Well, I just finished installing the HD lowers. I used the 58125-90B though but still had to drill for the bottom hole. I also drilled a small hole below the bottom hole into the main bracket and tapped threads into it to install additional bolts to support further down the blade. I'm anxious for my ride home (45 miles) after work for a test. Will report the findings and will send pics of a black one with these on it. (We have a blue and a red already....best for last ;) ) If not quite satisfied, I'll try tilting the windshield a little.

No more Mr. Bobblehead!

Well, I'm sure glad I did this. I will admit that much of my ride home was with the wind but what a difference. I ride with a 3/4 helmet with a face shield. I usually kept the shield down to help keep my glasses on when running down the interstate hiway. But now, with so little air blowing at me, I decided to just leave the shield up and no problems with eye glasses. I may actually want more air on those hot days. After about 10 miles at 65 MPH, I had to get on a different highway for the last leg home. This time I had a 10 to 20 mPH crosswind. I still felt some wind during the ride but even crosswinds are better. And the wind felt was not that turbulent, bobblehead making type of wind. One more drastic difference is now I can hear my engine. I have never been able to hear the motor at highway speeds because of the wind noise and buffeting. My vision is drastically improved also as I don't have that jiggling camera effect. I don't think I'll mess with tilting the windshield for a while. I look forward to more testing. :) If you don't mind doing a little drilling, and like chrome over plexiglass, AND like paying $71 out the door as opposed to $165, I recommend this mod. As soon as I can, I will post a pic so you all can see what you think of it. Oh BTW, If I had to do it differently, I think I would go with the other HD lowers simply because the recessed area on the sides are not necessary to clear the OEM engine bar. And since I had to drill anyway, I see no advantage to have the notched out lowers at least if you have the OEM engine guards.

HD lowers, mods required!

Yes, I bought the same part number, and yes, you have to drill a new hole to fit the stock windscreen mounting holes. Not really a big deal, but it does have to be done. Also, the cutouts for the crash bar don't do anything with the stock bars. The lowers don't even come close anyway. I just used a 1/4 inch bolt with a 1/4 x 1.5 inch stainless steel fender washer, with three 1 inch fender washers for spacers. Everything that's commonly available at your local hardware store. I've included some photos to help show this.
When all is said and done, I have yet to ride when the wind wasn't blowing at least 20 mph, but it's already obvious, this mod really works!

Thanks to all the good info

Thanks to all the good info from you guys, I got mine on yesterday. My neighbor has the local Harley shop so I went to see him. We found that Kuryakyn has an identical part. Retailed for $60. Drilled the 2 holes in each side and bolted them on. Like y'all said... a whole new world!! No more blurry eyes, bobble head, and I can hear the v-twin again. Outstanding mod.
Kuryakyn part # 1106 is notched for the engine guard, (cobra). # 1105 has no notches.
I have the OEM guards so no notch needed.
Thanks for the tips.

Added windscreen tilt.

I tilted my windscreen back today so that it is now in line with the forks. Wow! I was happy with the chrome lowers, but now, I just can't believe it. It was kind of strange because I got a little nervous at first because I could hear things that I never heard before. Added benefit, even with the medium height screen on, I thought I would like just a little more view over the top, and this tilt makes it about perfect for me, and I'm 5' 10".

Windscreen tilt

How did you tilt your windscreen back, did you drill another hole somewhere or did you just tilt the slack out of it. I did not find much slack when I tried to tilt it any, but can not figure out if need to drill another upper hole or lower hole to get windscreen angle to match forks. I would appreciate instructions on how you did yours.

Tilt

Hi removed the windscreen and drilled a new hole for the top bolt on each side. I drilled a 3/8 inch hole and put it right next to the original hole, leaving just a thin web in-between. I had planned to cut that out and make a slot, but when I mounted the screen first to see if I had moved it far enough, I was right where I wanted it, so I didn't do any more to it. That portion is covered up anyway. This is a very poor pic, but it sort of shows where the hole is.

HD Lowers Installed

Hi MNeedham73,
You mentioned that you had to modify the lowers for installation. Can you explain what you needed to do to get them to fit on the VStar13T? I am looking for chrome lowers and that price is great! Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Pat

I had to drill holes in the

I had to drill holes in the lowers where the lower bolt of the windshield bracket is on the bike. I used the stock top hole on the lower for the upper bolt.

Looks like I'll have to drill another hole through both the lower and windshield bracket though. They shake pretty good as they are. For now, I put heavy duty 3M double sided tape between the windshield bracket and the lower. It'll work until I can get hold of a heavy enough drill to go through the windshield bracket. I'm not sure my cordless will handle it.

I'll take some close up pics when I get home today. Or, you can look for Elizabeth's picture in the modifications image gallery to give you an idea (her pics are on page 7, I think).

HD Lowers Modification

Thanks for the feedback. I may look to change out my entire windshield assembly with added lowers.

?

what mods did you have to do to make those work anything major???

Looks good! Got a part

Looks good! Got a part number and price?

Harley P/N is 58121-85B.

Harley P/N is 58121-85B. Cost w/tax was $71 and change.

Credit goes to Elizabeth for the idea. Saw the pics of the deflectors on her bike and liked it, so I went that route versus Buck's.

HD lowers

Part #58125-90B, works better. The top 2 holes in the lowers fit exactly with the holes in your windshield mount on the Tourer. They also have a notched cutout to clear engine bars. I am running Cobra Fatty bars and they clear mine fine.

Different hole pattern

Well, I got the HD lowers today and got home only to find the hole pattern of these lowers do NOT match the existing windshield holes. These 58125-90B lowers will work but will need to have the lower hole drilled with an additional hole for support. I still like the looks and hope the functionality is all there after installation. I was originally going to get the other HD lowers posted here but was hoping not to have to drill any more than necessary. Too bad Yamaha hasn't been too enthusiastic about getting us some stock, effective lowers, especially when it's needed so badly with the buffeting delemma. Will drill tommorrow at my shop and post he results.

drill hole

A little embarrassed to reply, my son was helping me and seems we did not keep up with what each other was doing. THERE IS A HOLE DRILLED 3 1/8’ below the top hole in the lowers. Sorry about the bad information in my previous post, at 67, my memory sometimes play tricks on me. But with that center hole drilled with ease, the lowers slip right in between the windshield brackets (do one side at a time). As I mentioned before, there is some vibration at my highway speed (65). I cut a 2’ angle clamp in half, filed some on each half, put a slight bend in them, used a self locking nut and clamped the bottom hole of the lowers to the bottom of my windshield bracket. I see no need to drill a hole in the stock brackets, as the clamp works fine for 2000 miles.
Here is the picture of the bottom clamp:

Thanks for the part number.

Thanks for the part number. I have a couple of questions though. Will these work with OEM engine guards and did you tilt the windshield back any?

I have the OEM engine guards

I have the OEM engine guards and there is plenty of clearance. I didn't adjust the windshield at all.

Sounds great. I called my

Sounds great. I called my local HD dealer and they had one on order already so I'll get mine soon, maybe tommorow. My reason for going this way was chrome always fancied me more than plexiglass like Bucks. Also, price. at 1/3 the cost of Bucks. I'll let you kow how my ride is after installation. Thanks.
