Y.E.S.

I received a letter from Yamaha today trying to get me to buy the Y.E.S. I was wondering if any of you had purchased this and if you thought it was worth the money. I normally am not a fan of the extended warranty or service contracts. My bike is approx. one year old and the original warranty will expire next month. Thoughts ? Ideas ? Suggestions ?

bad bet

Buying an extended warrenty on anything is like betting you bought a bad product to begin with. I personaly think they are a waste of money. I have also heard so called experts on saving money say the same thing.

Just say NO to YES...another opinion

Never bet against the house. If anyone knows your bike better than you, it’s the people who built it. Extended warranties aren't offered for your benefit. They are offered because it’s a safe bet the underwriter is going to make money. There is no reason for a corporation to exist, other than to make money. In effect, what they are trying to say by offering four more years of coverage for $768.00 is that Yamaha is betting there will be less than $768.00 in repairs necessary to keep your bike on the road. Being a corporation, they wouldn’t be making the offer if they thought they were going to lose money. If you read the small print carefully, you will notice that there is no mention of coverage for electrical or fuel systems. I’m not saying they are not covered, but if they are not specifically stated to be covered items, they probably aren’t. Most warranties of this nature do not cover fuel or electrical systems. I couldn’t help but notice how many times the words “mechanical breakdown” appeared in bold print. They seemed to be over-emphasizing the point that nothing other than mechanical breakdowns were to be covered. Give them points for honesty. Yamaha’s definition of a mechanical breakdown is, “a total failure of a part, no longer being capable of performing the function for which it was designed”. This does not mean parts that fail as a result of normal wear and tear, and it is these parts, (which are specifically excluded from coverage by the extended warranty) that are the ones most likely to fail. So, you will be repairing or replacing them at your expense anyway. So what are you buying? If there is a total failure of a mechanical part, that cannot be attributed to misuse, neglect, or improper maintenance, and you have documentation to prove it, you may be covered. In forty-five plus years of riding, I have never had a mechanical failure, that in some way, was not my fault. Save your money for the repairs of normal wear items that are inevitable.

This is the first time I

This is the first time I have ever bought extended warranty for anything. I bought the bike at such a good price that I could justify the added expense. Another thing that went into my thinking was that mine (2007 model) is a first year bike and there may be some issues.
Well isn't this place a geographic oddity. Two weeks from everywhere :Ulysses Everett McGill

I bought it.

I put on another 48 months after the original warranty was out. It is the third most expensive unseen piece of bling I put on my bike. But I sometimes worry about breakdowns, and having one a long way from home. There is an allowance for motel if a repair takes overnight. And perhaps even more important for the 5 years of total ownership I can rest knowing that I have some type of coverage. I think at my age now a dealer won't try to consider what ever caused a defect to be associated with abuse.....so maybe the bill will be taken care of if I ever need a heavy expensive repair. The quality is built into these machines and some would argue that if Yamaha was so darn good why would they need an extended warranty.... but there are some people like me who just need the feeling of having longer protection in case something should show up. The warranty is transferable so if I should trade out before the time is up I might get a little something for it, or the dealer may feel that my bike is more attractive to sell over one that didn't have the warranty. ~ Butch
