oil and filter
Wish someone had told me how hard it would be to get the oil filter off my bike........ lol Didnt have a filter wrench, ended up using my awl to poke some holes and getting it off that way. That dang thing was tight! Then there was the wrong filter cunundrum! NAPA guy swore that the filter was made for bikes........ just not my bike! Ended up going back with oem. Guess I'll be buying a wrench and getting the right aftermarket filter. Oh, and the NAPA guy said he didnt handle Puralator filters and didnt know of anybody that did it town??? It aint never easy! there is a complete list of
there is a complete list of different filters (with part numbers - ) on the wiki of the 'other' 1300 forum you frequent. And it gives the NAPA part number - NAPA Gold 1365 . I got one there yesterday, and an oil filter end cap that fits, so you can use a socket wrench for easy on/off. One 'got ya', when you take off the old filter, make sure the old rubber gasket comes off too (don't ask how I know it can stay on)
Doing my first oil change surprised me, it will not just drain, had to start the bike for the pump to pump it out.
One heck of a lot easier than doing a oil change on my old V-Star 650 was.
oil filter
After looking at the filter box, I see they gave me "1356" instead of 1365. No wonder it didnt fit....... The filter actualy bottomed out before the o ring came in contact with the block. jdadoug
It aint never easy!
KN-147
Try the (K&N) KN-147. I bought them on ebay for about $9 each. It has a nut on the end that is the same size as the drain plug. Super easy!!!

Amsoil 10w-40 is probably the preferred oil
However, I've been very satisfied with the Mobil 1 5w-40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil I put in on the last change. It has given me an improvement of around 3mpg in my gas usage. The filter I'm using is a Bosch 3323.
How I Roll-Dog
I go to O'Rielley's, get Castrol T 20-50W and a 51358 Purolator filter. About $28 (I get 4 qts.) I used to go to Wally World and get Fram filters, but kept hearing/reading bad reviews about them tearing up under high pressure, bought OEM oil. I looked into using synthetic but, people allegedly in the know, and forums, told me with a wet clutch it would increase wear & tear causing replacement before time, so it wasn't practical. This is my experience.

Amsoil again
I went with the Amsoil 10 - 40 and the Pure one filter per many forum recommendations.
I went with Amsoil synthetic
I went with Amsoil synthetic mcf 10w-14 and champion ph2867 ( it has the new 1 second oil pressure designed for Porche, according to the rep)

Make a decision and don't look back. Go for it!
Wal Mart...
Wal Mart sells both. Oil -- Rotella Shell T 5W/40 around $17.00 bucks for a gallon, Oil filter-- SuperTech ST7317 a couple of bucks.
Filter is a little longer but fits just fine.
PH7317
QGV79
the fram PH7317 should fit our bike according to the online catalog. My local Walmart has it stock as the PH7317 and the step up the xtragruard XG7317.

Amsoil
I use Amsoil products. I use the eaOM 103 or 103c (Krome) oil filter. And Amsoil 10-40 oil. Hope this helps.
Amsoil for me
I use MCF and EaOM103.
