Break-in Service

I called my dealer today to schedule my 600 mile service. I told them that I was changing my own oil / filter and only needed the valve clearance checked, cables adjusted, drive belt tension checked, etc. They put me on hold and when they came back I was told that their Yamaha "guru" (their words, not mine) said that ALL they do at 600 miles is oil / filter change. The guy told me that they would check the valves when I came in for my 2500 mile service. They had told me when I bought the bike that the first service costs $225 - $250 .... can you say "expensive oil change". Sounds like if they are not getting $225+ for an oil change, they don't want to see me. Now .... the question. Has anyone else had this experience??? Should I be worried about the valves??? MY owners manual says valves checked at 600 miles and makes NO MENTION of a 2500 mile service. The sad part is that of the 2 dealerships in driving distance of me, I bought from the one that is SUPPOSE to have the best service department!!! I'm not worried about anything except the valves.

When I brought my bike to

When I brought my bike to the dealer for it's first service, I also asked about the valves, and he said, they have checks many on the first service and never had to adjust them. They said they adjust more on the second service. I am close to my second service now and I can hear a small ticking coming from the top of the motor, so it is a sure sign that they need to be adjusted. I now have 5000kms on the bike it is due when it reaches 6000kms.

Keep the shiny side up..

Break in service

I brought my bike in for 600 mile maintenance also, and told them I had a ticking in one cylinder and that the valves should be checked. When I returned to get the bike, they told me the ticking was normal and that the valves should be checked at 15,000 miles, and that it is a big job to check them, so they didn't. I told the guy what the service manual calls for and he laughed and said he's never heard of that. I ended up paying $170.00 basically for an oil change. I guess I'll learn to live with tick, tick, tick........

600 Mile Service

Just had my 600 mile service completed and had the oil and filter changed as well as all the normal service done (belt adjusted, cables checked and lubed, bolts tight, etc,) but did not have the valves checked. Service Manager said they should be checked at 4,000 miles and not 600 miles. All total, the bill came to $126 and took two hours but they only charged me for one hour of labor. I was satisfied with the service and the cost.

The only thing...

The only thing you need to be worried about is your dealer's service department. It is clear from the widely varied experiences we have all had with standard maintenance content and cost that our dealers are no different than many auto shops. Many of them do not know any more about what they are doing than you do and many of them will rob you blind if you don't pay attention. It's shameful and dissappointing but I suppose it's just the state of the world. You folks that have good solid dealers you can trust are very lucky.

Fair winds~

My first servicing

Hey rksharp-

My Dealer and Service guy have been really good to work with. My 600 mile servicing consisted of everything outlined by Yamaha except the valve adjustment and they adjusted my gear shift pedal for me. My service manager said the valve adjustment is a waste of my money and a waste of his time so he said they will do it at 4000 miles. First servicing here for me was $105.00 which i was just fine with.

My first service

Mine consisted of oil change, cable and belt adjust. Factory specs on belt are to tight had to loosen belt abit because of noise and vibration.
Dealer checked it out said everything was tight. All said and done $65. Had to have my left mirror replaced because the mirror backing was coming off the glass.

The first service on my

The first service on my 1300T cost $171.07. Besides the oil/filter change, they checked the blinkers, brakes/fluid, lights, tires, belt tension and adjusted the clutch. Next recommended service is at 4,000 miles. By comparison, the first service on my 805cc Suzuki S50 a couple of years ago cost $197.21. It took 1.5 hours. The 3-hour 4,000 mile service cost $302.14. Unless you do all the work yourself, which I don't any more, properly maintaining a motorcycle isn't cheap. In my early years of riding (mid-70s), I did a lot of my own work. It seems like bikes were easier to keep up with back then.
