Uh-Oh!! Only 2000KM and I'm having Speedo problems! Needle sticks on start-up and won't sweep/self-test even tho' other lights flash/self-test. Sometimes comes off zero when I roll but other times have to stop after a block or two and restart. Then it sweeps and it's usually OK for the rest of the day. Spoke to my dealer who said Yamaha Canada won't authorize replacement unless unit is completely busted. So every time I visit the dealer (75 km away!) it's working fine! I mentioned several members of this forum have had speedos replaced for similar circumstances but he called Mammy Yammy on the spot and all they would agree to do is pull the speedo and check connections etc. Kind of get the impression the 'Bike Bidness' is booming and dealers are more interested in pushing product rather than cultivating new or loyal customers! :(
speedo and lights
Just had something like that happen , speedo swept back and forth lites in speedo head came on all of them blinking on and off . bike surged then died . fired up went a block dead . funny thing 1st time lights stayed on , 2nd not could here sizzling type sound while trying to start . turned out to be pos batt cable was loose . Fixed it on the side of the road been good since . I think someone else mentioned it ck. your batt connections , just an FYI .
Same here (very intermittent)
I had it happen twice (once at less than 100 miles and then once at about 5000 miles). It was not reproducible and there was nothing unique about when it happened. I told my dealer and they said that they'll keep a record of me reporting it in their computer in case it happens after my warranty expires. They wanted me to leave the bike with them to see if they could reproduce it but I declined saying this is probably one of those things that they will do this, do that, etc. and not be able to reproduce it and the end result is I have no bike for a few days.
We know the fix -- just do it! they cannot -- they need proof (I guess I have to have camera handy at 60mph and when the needle goes to 0mph, take the photo with blurry the background to show that the bike is moving). Any Photoshopers here? :-)

Not good
You will have to have the speedometer replaced. It won't get any better, just worse. Mine did this while under warranty and I did post it on this site a long time ago. Yamaha replaced the defective speedometer and all is well now. There were enough people that had this problem that it should have been a recall, but I haven't heard of any recalls. The replacement costs was quoted to me by my dealer as $500, but mine was covered under warranty. Yamaha should be aware that this was a problem with some bikes and take care of it, but I have my doubts if they do if the warranty is no longer good.

Speedo
First, I'd have to allow the dealer to check the connections. Nothing to lose. This may sound almost absurd and it may already have been checked, but if not, you first may want to check to be certain the battery connections are rock-solid tight. Once the bike goes out the door for the very first time, I would guess that very few riders ever check these connections. I had a similar issue, but it prevented the engine from even turning over. The problem....it was a connection I found that certainly didn't appear to be loose, but on the other hand, it also wasn't "tight enough." Once tightened better, it was fine. Anyway, just a thought.
