Installing Buck

Installing
Buck's Lowers

Buck's
Lowers Website

  Perhaps nothing is too simple
for a how-to article but

 this
pushes the limits. In fact Buck's included single

 page of
instructions is sufficient. I write this to

 illustrate just
how
down right easy this is and to post

some better photos of
what the lowers will look like on

your bike.  Now if I could
just convey the absolutely

wondrous job of minimizing the buffeting that
they

provide.

This is a four bolt upgrade.

Install the lowers one side at a time.
Begin by

removing the two
bolts as indicated by the yellow

arrows.

    My lowers came pre-assembled
to their brackets.

Leave the protective paper in place to add
some

insurance against scratches during installation.
Install

the proper lower to the corresponding side. Buck

provides the every so slightly longer bolts plus their

washers that are required for a proper install.
The

"rounded" side
(shinier?) of the washer should face

the lowers' bracket to help
avoid scratching the

chrome surface. Install the bolts just tight
enough to

gently hold the lower in place.  Repeat for
the

opposite side.

Adjust the lowers to be parallel to the front forks. If

you have Big Bar engine guards, turn the handlebars

side to
side and check for clearance. Re-adjust as

necessary.

Tighten the four bolts.
Remove the protective paper.

Yep, you're done!    Now go ride in
amazement.

   The right side.

The Left side

Bucks lower not 100% wind blocker/deflector

Maybe It's just me. I installed and test rode for a week. I still feel the wind beating me on the cheeks. If I use my hand to block the middle of the gas tank.
The wind buffeting is gone. Postition it a bit lower on the fork, it would help, I think (I havn't tried it yet)
I have the yamaha lower on my 1100cc silverado. It's 100% blocking the wind that comes from under tank though

My 2 cents

Got my Buck's Lowers

in the mail Wednesday--very quick turn-around from Buck--5 days from when I mailed the check.

Thanks to this "how-to" post I left the paper on until installed and I checked my clearances on the crash bars. I'm glad I did as I discovered the mounting bracket for the right lower was actually contacting the gas tank before full right lock. Thanks to the slotted mounts I was able to get the lowers both parallel to the forks and positioned so the brackets didn't hit the tank and the lower plexi was just about an 1/8" behind the turn signals--perfect!

Of course I had to do a test ride immediately so I rolled out onto the highway and cranked it up to 70 mph. Much, much better. There is still some air hitting me in the face from below but the vibrating, blurred vision was basically gone. At 45 mph it is now calm enough to enjoy a bourbon cigar if one was so inclined. :)

Hats Off to Buck!

When I ordered Bucks Lowers I wasn't to crazy about the looks. They came in and I installed them.
Still not crazy about they way they look, but they work GREAT. So, I will live with the looks until...

Bucks Lowers

Add me to the list of impressed. I would not have believed how much difference two little pieces of plastic can make. Well worth the investment.

Knew I wouldn’t be disappointed

Thanks guys for the feedback. Another item for my wish list. I smoke too James so good selling point, although I prefer to use my butt breaks for the physical comfort as well as the addition. Have to say Butch that although I like the chrome, I’m not crazy about the “hose-clamp” look, so I’ll give the Bucks a good look.

Gotta tell ya James that I feel for you guys with the ice. Loved the photo you posted though. We had a big ice storm here in 1999. The very reason I bought a generator and had my retirement home wired for the hook-up. I was lucky because I lived in the city at that time and only had a few hours without power. Many folks all around us were more than a week without electricity. Hope you’re fairing okay.

Have to tell you James, I’ve been tempted to snap a shot in my back yard with my four foot snow banks and post it. Maybe I’ll pull “Enterprise” out of her spot in the garage one of these days and do that, just to let the folks in the deep south see what a white Christmas is all about.

Bucks lowers installation

I’m all for avoiding unnecessary buffeting so I have a couple of questions. Lowers are a stock item on the Nomad so after riding my green machine for eight years with lowers, and only a few weeks and less than 1000 miles on “Enterprise” without them, I’m curious.

Anyone have lowers [Bucks-National Cycle, etc] mounted with the stock Yamaha engine guards?

If yes to above, do they interfere with steering?

Are they beyond the capability of a less than fully functional technician to mount or would a backyard mechanic like me be able to mount them? I do have a substantial tool collection and am reasonably good at improvising.

As always, you guys astound me with your helpfulness. The step by step instructions posted to this site are simply amazing! I look forward to some feedback. Thanks.

Buck's Lowers

Here's the deal, Conrad. I smoke. When Butch and others testimonied about Buck's Lowers I was intrigued. Then I saw they cost $165.00. Arrgh!
Before Buck's, ash blew in my eye. After Buck's, I can light up at 40 mph with a zippo. My crash bars are stock. When I mounted Buck's Lowers, I was able to turn the forks and adjust the clearance. As you already know from previous posts, I'm mechanically challenged. Took me ten minutes.
A few days later, during service, my mechanic said "Don't you hear that?" "Hear what?", I responded. "Your left lower is too close to the plex in the windshield and it's vibrating against it. Here, I'll fix it." He said. Took him a few turns an allen wrench.
Get 'em, you won't regrett 'em.

Fitment

No problem with clearance with the National Cycle Lowers. I also have the National Cycle Two up Switchblade windshield. My windshield is slightly wider than the stock yamaha shields. My engine guards are yamaha too. On Buck's website he makes disclaimers as to what his lowers will not fit with what. Any other quesions you may have you might address directly to him. Whatever he tells you would also apply to National Cycle Lowers too as far as fitment, and clearance concerns. I think some riders here made adjustments to the lowers that they purchased. Some wanted them lower yet. But for all purposes it is a simple bolt on procedure to install them. YOu would have no problem. The National Cycle lowers use hose clamp looking things to secure the lowers to the forks. It is not as clean as Bucks. ~ Butch

Side benefit to Buck's Lowers

I think Buck's Lowers probably offer some protection for the paint on your tank as a side benefit. Lots of people seem to like to hit the gravel shoulder (we have mostly gravel shoulders here in Manitoba) as they pass by. I think they're trying to be courteous by giving me extra room, but end up spraying stones and other crap as they go by. This is the opposite of semi trailers who seem to think that their trailer is about 10 feet shorter than it really is when they're pulling back in front of me after passing. Moral of the story is seek out the less traveled roads...

Buck rocks!!!!!

Yep, just got mine tonite from Buck. Took all of 2 minutes to install. Look great.
Helluva nice guy to deal with too!!!

Now just wish it wasn't ZERO degrees out with LOTS of snow, so I could try 'em out!!!!!

Winter sucks!

Thanks.

That looks so easy! I could do that. How much are they? Midlifemom

bucks lowers

Good evening, MIdlifemom. Didn't see where anyone replied to your question about how much teh bucks lowers were, so thought I"d drop a line. (probably redundant as hell by now, but I try)>
$165.00 shipped from Buck. He sends them super fast via usps usually.
They work like the dickens.

Have a great one.

Bucks lowers

I just got mine today. Took all of 5 minutes to install and then went for a test ride. What a miracle, no more buffeting and trying to blow my helmet off. These things made riding 100% better. I highly recommend them to everybody!
