Bill,
If you're leaning towards the "solo" setup, take a look at Pacific Coast Star's "Potato Chip" seat. At $150.00, I decided to give it a try. (They send you the seat, you ride it for a week or so and decide if you like it.... if you do, you send them your stock seat; if you don't, simply return it). Anyway, it is a seamless seat, smaller and firmer than the stock seat. I feel like I'm sitting lower "in" the bike instead of on top of it like I did with the stock seat and there's no doubt that it looks better (to my eye). Here are a couple of pictures that show the difference between the stock seat and the PCS seat...
Did my own
I did my own seat modification. It is cheap and clean, but not ideal for long rides.
