Hi all! I recently changed my oil to mobil I 15/50w. When I take off from the house and get onto the freeway, my oil pressure light has been comming on for 15 sec and up to a minute or so and then it goes off. I didn't have this problem with the rotella or yamaha lube that I have ran before. I have about 7100 mile on my star. Any thoughts, comments about this/ any of you had the same thing happen? Ken
I had the same issue, even
I had the same issue, even after the bike was serviced at the dealer. I read the manual and was suprised to see hat it actually oil quanity and not pressure. Anyways I found the first start in the morning when the bike is on the kick stand the light will come on, pick her up and it goes off. I was wondering if the switch inside was sticking.....Everytime I see it come on I do do a physical check in the site glass. I wish Yamaha would have made that light for pressure, cause it would be possible to have good quanity and no pressure.
Keep the shiny side up..
I use a longer filter(3.25
I use a longer filter(3.25 in.) and figure with filter and oil change 3.7 qts. My light came on also,i just put in the gallon from then on,no light.
You may be surprised to
You may be surprised to learn, as I was, that the oil light is not for oil pressure, but for oil level. It seems Yamaha thinks that is far more important than oil pressure, as they give you two ways to check. If you filled the crankcase until the oil level was where it was supposed to be in the oil level window, chances are you didn't put in enough. I had the same problem, and it went away when I started putting in 3.6 quarts as the manual says, instead of going by the window. (BTW, my oil level is between the lines on the window when I have added only 3 quarts!)

When I changed my oil
What i noticed is: I filled the oil until the window said it was full. Started the bike for about 30 seconds. Added more, until showed full. I then drove it around the block, and had to add more. Then it was full. Because I went on a 5 minute ride, and the oil still showed full. So i agree with Kaelar, Put in the 3.6 quarts, (with filter) and you should be fine.
Mobil 1 15-40
I called my dealer before I changed my oil at 4000 miles and he said that 15-50 synthetic oil was fine to use in a 1300. I guess I will see if I get the same problem when I get to 7500 miles.
Don't take life to seriously - You are not going to survive it anyway.
Too Heavy?
Were the rotella and yamalube oils 50w as well?
50W may be a little too heavy for our bikes. It could be that the engine is having a bit of trouble pushing it through the lines until it gets warmed up more. I've only heard of people using 50w consistently in the bigger engines, or in really hot operating environments.
Just my 2 cents, but unless you're riding in extreme conditions, running 50w is probably unnecessary.

I'm with you here, Boomer
The one and only time I put Mobil1 20w-50 in my bike I had the same issue as Scubapro. I do believe that a 50w oil is too thick for our bikes.
Scubapro, I recommend that you give Mobil1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil at 5w-40 a try. It's fully synthetic, has none of those clutch damaging friction modifiers and has worked very well in my bike. If you are a believer of the motorcycle-specific oil hype then Amsoil would be a good one to go with. Amsoil has recommended their 10w-40 oil as best for our bikes.
When the 600-mi service was
When the 600-mi service was done on mine, the dealer put in 20w-50. So far (1400 miles later) it seems to be ok, no unusual noises, etc. To be honest, i remember when GM said if you used 10w-40 it would void the warranty, and i've run Pennzoil 20w-50 in my GMC for almost 300,000 miles now with no engine repairs at all. I have 227,000 on my Astro, same oil, same results. IIRC GM's reason was that the additives required to get the 10-40 spread detracted from the lubricating qualities, etc, so i've always been a bit leery of using 10w-40 in much of anything that i value.
I'd sure be interested in hearing anyone else's opinion?
oil pressure light don't come on no more
Hi all! Thanks for the posts and the info! I rechecked my oil level, it seemed a bit low so I added about a cup. It brought the level up to the very top level of the sight glass. When I left the house today on my way to work, the light didn't come on, but I didn't get on to the freeway for about 6 miles. Maybe adding just that much more was just the ticket. I have noticed that since i changed to the Mobil I, the whinning of the cam chain is much less and a lot of the "clunkiness" in the shifting has smoothed out a lot! I had read good things about the Mobil I 20/50, so I thought that I would give it a try. maybe at the next oil change I'll go with the truck 5/40w. Again, thanks for all of the info, IT IS APPRECIATED!!!!! Ken
