Weirdness

I read where people are getting 200 miles to a tank. The most I've ever gotten was 180.
My gas light comes on usually around 120-130 mile mark, and takes 3 gallons to fill.

Today, the gas light came on at 160 miles exactly. I have yet to fill up to see how much gas it'll take to do so.
So here's the weird thing, my last fillup on Sunday, the hose didn't do the auto stop click. And I filled her to the brim, plus a splash down the side of the tank.

Could it be that I've never filled her up all the way, in the past 16 months?

Whether riding 2-up, or not,

Whether riding 2-up, or not, my 08 1300T averages 50-53 miles per gallon (245-260 miles per tankful), using 87 octane. On a recent trip, our best gas mileage was 57 mpgs, or 279 miles per tank. When filling up, I stop when the gas goes barely over the "rim." For some reason, Powersports Network lists the average at only 42 mpgs.

Depends how you drive.

Saturday, took a 400 mile trip to see the youngest at college. With the wife on, and doing a steady 70-75 mph, the light came on at 168 miles both times. the last time I went another 32 miles before I filled up. It took 4.76 gallons.
Since then I've driven to work twice, 46 miles each way at 65 mph, with some running around town miles thrown in. Last night the light came on at 192 miles, drove another 23 and filled up. Took 4.56 gallons.
By the way, I did punch a hole in the filler tube with a simple punch. Right side just below the lip, and I always fill up while on the bike holding it level.

More then likly your about a

More then likly your about a half gallon or so from filling it up unless you keep clicking on/off after the gas covers your filler neck holes. Some people are modding the filler neck to make it quicker and no mess filling the tank to the top.I'v gotten as high as 150 miles before the light came on and as low as 110,for the most part I get 40 mpg as most of my week is city driving, get on the interstate and it goes up to 50.If I can find the post on the mod i'll post it here.

Fill 'er up

Some people pack it in. I do meself when I find a hose that ain't high pressured. I have found that most times when gas is showing above those holes, I can still keep pumping if the pressure's low. I have never had it to come out the top of the tank other than when too high a pressure. Pump a little, then it'll go down a little, so I don't know what mileage per gallon or how many gallons it holds. If there were some way to trickle it in while holding the bike level, no telling how much it would actually hold. Specs say 4.8 (or .9) & lite is supposed to come on when it reaches the decimal point, which is between 143-156 miles on trip meter for me. SO I don't know if in over 2 years I have ever completely filled my tank up.

So I feel that all these results everyone is posting is affected by factors other than just driving styles/habits. Since the only way I can figure to do it is to run it dry then use a measured amount of gas from a container, run that out, the refill using the same container. Also pumps can vary on their measurements, may not be enough to arrest them, but a couple tenths either way would skew the results also. If you fill it like the manual says you are not going to get very much gas mileage per tank. If you pull the nozzle out some, say even with the hole, you will be able to get more gas in, so more miles per tank.

When you got the 180 miles, was that run dry, completely out? Do you know how many miles you had on the warning light odometer then?

" If there were some way to trickle it in while holding the bike level".

I always stay astraddle with the bike level when I fill Redd. Never beside her with the bike sitting on the kickstand. Am I doing it wrong?

Stay astraddle

I would say it's a safety thing. If by chance gas spews out from the filler and gets your crotch wet with gas and a spark ignites the gas...not a pretty picture...OUCH!

Keep the faith, Rog

Maybe the tank is flexing...

Maybe the tank is flexing and popping, like the front fender, and the tank is now a bit larger!
