So, I have been convinced that I have been done with modifications on my bike for the past 2 weeks. I was just waiting for all parts to arrive, then I would install them and be done with mods for a while. That looks like it has now changed. While on a major road in town, I encountered a backup. It is very common at this intersection and takes 4-5 lights to get through it. As I stop, I see the pickup truck in front of me, and notice that he has his reverse lights on. I quickly stopped, noticed that I did not have any room to the right, and I was not going to the left as that never works out well for motorcycles on two lane roads. I then started to honk my horn (I do have the stebel nautilis, so he had to hear it, I know my ears were ringing). Anyway, I start "running" backwards as fast as I can on the bike, and he kept coming. Finally I had to stop to avoid hitting the car behind me, but the truck did not. He ran into my bike, and dented in the fender. Luckily it was very low speed and he was "done backing up" when he hit me. Either way, he did not notice, so he started to make a left turn. I jumped off of my bike and pounded on his truck to get his attention. He finally stopped and rolled down his window. I told him, "You just hit me." He said, "Oh, well, meet me over there." Turns out he was in a hurry because his kid was crying. He was backing up so he could take a route around the light. He just couldn't see me, because "you were on the passenger side of the truck." I was on the passenger side, because my first instinct was to pull to the right side of the road just in case there was a way to avoid the accident. Unfortunately, this part of the road was next to a large curb, so there was no way around the truck. I looked at the damage. Luckily, the only visible damage was to the fender, as it was pushed back and just barely touching the tire. I was able to pull it out so I can ride home without causing more damage. He was pretty cool about everything, and gave me all of his information, apologized for inconvenience, and said that he will be in the area on Thursday, and will deliver a check if the damage is not too severe. We will turn it in to insurance if it is too pricey, or if I cannot get ahold of him on Thursday. I did get his insurance, and it was a company truck, so I should not have any problems. Well, now it looks like I will have to replace a fender.
My first question. Is there any reason to suspect further damage to the bike? I barely felt him hit me, and the fender was just barely touching the tire. Also, the truck was a large Ford F-250 super duty, and appeared to have a lift kit as well. He only made contact with my fender, from what I can tell. There is no visible damage to any other part of the bike. I will probably get an estimate from the dealer to make sure, but I want to know what to look for before talking with them.
I will likely perform the repair myself, if it is only fender damage, as the fender does not appear too difficult to remove. Also, I recently bought a motorcycle jack so I can avoid the cost to maintain the bike at the dealer. But, when looking up the price for a new fender, I noticed that the RSTD bars were fairly cheap. I cannot stop modifying my bike, so I will also put the RSTD bars on my bike at the same time. I tried to look the RSTD bars up on S&S cycles, but I cannot find them clearly listed. Does anyone have a link to where they purchased these bars? I really do not want to buy them from the dealer, if I can get them cheaper elsewhere. Thanks for your help
