I've read all the posts re different options for saddlebags, both in terms of the variety of bags available, and the myriad related accessories.
But what do I actually *need* in order to fit saddlebags? ie. what is essential, and what is just bling? I wouldn't mind some bling if I can afford it, but I also want to get forward controls, so the bling will have to wait until another day.
Leather Covered Hard Bags
I installed these leather covered hard bags which included the necessary mounting hardware for $599. That is about half the price of the stock Yamaha hard bags that come on the touring model. They installed in about half an hour and are very nice quality.

Throw Overs
I have a set of leather throw over bags that I found on ebay for about $75. All you would need for the throw overs is the cheaper bag support bars from Yamaha (STR-3D873-47-00 $105.95).

Bags
I love the stock tourer bags. The hard shell is nice and the ability to lock your bag is great. They have lot's of room for week-end trips.
I totally agree! The hard
I totally agree! The hard shell stock tourer bags are super! They look even better with the addition of the OEM saddlebag guards. Plus, the guards provide protection if ever needed.
I also totally totally agree
I also totally totally agree on the factory tourer bags. I even get (now), to haul stuff for my HD riding bud. (their little throw over bags are not only a hassle to open/close all the time, but they're small to boot!!!!
And the option for keeping honest people honest (lock feature), is a true gawdsend. Also they're (for the most part), water proof. Ridden thru LOTS of rain, and so far nothing inside has gotten wet.
Did I mention you can stuff alotta stuff in them?............they're BIG!
Plus you can (as an option), bling bling the snot out of them with the saddle bag guards!!! (you can never have too much bling bling!) :>)
