follow up question

I am in the market for a new bike and the 1300 is on the list. How did it hold up against the Road King based on the following criteria?

Comfort?
Pulling power?
Roll on power?

1300 compared to HD

Caine,
I have been an HD rider all of my riding life. Since I never had a Road King I can't compare the V Star 1300 Tourer to one. The VStar is my first, and most defenitly not my last, mertic bike. The issue that I have had to deal with in terms of comfort on the 2008 1300 T are that the stock handlebars are not comfortable. I am six feet tall and like to ride leaning back. I am on my second set of aftermarket bars. I tried the Nostalgias and found that they are too low, too wide and do not have enough pullback for a guy of my dimensions or riding style. I contacted Shane at SS Custom Cycles and got a pair of his Bagger Bars. They are a wonderful improvement but I am currently considering getting either the RoxSpeed risers in addition to or a set of Flanders as I would like at least two more inches in pullback. That will require new plumbing.
I am happy with the seat.
The floor boards are not adjustable.
The Windshield is not adjustable. I find my self looking around it rather than over it. I am seriously thinking of taking a Saber saw to it in order to chop about three inches off of it. My experience with dealing with home modifying windshields is that rounding off the edge is the toughest part. Even a nice sanding tool or Dremmel tool does not seem to get that nice smooth laser cut look back.
The speedo: I would have preferred to have it on the tank. There is no gas gauge either, just a low gas light indicator.

The scoot has plenty of power, in my opinion. I am surprised at this and in comparing it to my last scooter (an HD 2005 Dyna Super Glide - 1450 CC/88 Cubic Inch), I am rather happy at the VStar's all around performance. The gas milage is just as good as the HD's by the way. I bought an extended warranty at the time of purchase. If you decide to do the same please read the conditions and other associated caveats and make sure that you can meet the demands.

All in all I am happy with the VStar as the comfort related issues can be dealt with with a few mods. I have never owned a motorcycle that did not require a mod or two along the way.
Ride safe.

V* 1300 vs Road King

I know the Road King better than do most of those who have them. Also, my best riding Bud has an '07 RK-Classic, which I've ridden. Comfort...not close; Pulling power...not close; Roll on power...not close. In each of these 3 areas, my 1300 is far superior to his RK-C. Additionally, his RK has the HD Stage 1 kit. Don't misunderstand me...I happen to really like the RK-C and, myself, came within a gnat's eyelash of buying one. This was until the cobwebs left and all of my senses came back to me. : ) Personally....again, this is purely "my" feelings....if you set these bikes side by side and said I could have either one as a gift, I would without any hesitation take the 1300T, regardless of it costing $8,000-10,000 less. Truly, it's a better quality bike and a much superior value and one that does most everything better than does the RK-C. I will say that the RK's stock seat is absolutely better than is the 1300's, although, I'd end up changing it, also.

With all of this said, remember why your favorite ice cream shop offers so many different flavors...to suit everyone's taste, which generally is different from person to person.

Enjoy your week.

Color

Love that seashell color! I just realized you had a windshield! You rode all the way to Glendale without it! I salute you sir! Much tougher than I would be.

Windshield

Nitro,
Took the windshield off to cut it down to a more comfortable size. I still have yet to do so by the way. No glass guys in BZB so I will have to go to Sierra Vista. The unit is still in my cage, which by the way is not getting much road time due to the wonderful weather we have been experiencing herre in southern AZ. No offense to Morg but we have it pretty good out here in the desert too.

Windshield

Hey, CC.

Cutting down the shield in order to see "over" it, rather than "thru" it is much to one's benefit, but you can accomplish the same thing by tilting and lowering the stock shield. This accomplishes three things: 1. lowers the shield by 3+ inches. I'm 5'9" and, even with a Corbin seat (which sits lower than a stocker), I easily see over it; 2. provides a nicer rakish look to the bike with the sides of the shield following almost the identical angles of the forks; 3. and, certainly not as significant, but it also catches a few less bugs & critters than does the stock straight-up shield. We attested to this earlier this year when three of us rode to the N. Central FL area at a time when FL's love bugs were out in their masses. My good friends, one with a 1300T with a medium shield, the other with a HD Road King, each had 20% more bugs on their shield than did I while traveling both to and from our original destination.

Just a thought.

How to tilt windshield?

I'm also 5'-9" and agree that the windshield angle looks bad by not lining up with the fork angle, so I'd love to change it. How did you tilt yours? And how did you lower it without hitting the headlight?

tilted/lowered shield

check your email. : )

I am interested also...

I am planning to tilt my 'shield in the spring, when I can get out again (-7C/20F here today!) I understand a new hole about 1/2 inch ahead of the upper hole will do it?

Any advice is appreciated.

Seasons Greetings!

I slotted the top holes

I slotted the top holes instead of a single hole. Makes the windshield infinitely adjustable.........................paul

Windshield

Paul,
Can you take a pictire or two of your windshield and post 'em? I am interested in finding a way to adjust the windshield. I have been going back and forth with whether to get it cut or not.

Bugs and such

Morg,
Thank you for the update. I am having a hard time with the stock windshield in that it is too tall for me. I am constantly looking around it rather than over it. Would you mind telling me how to go about lowering it etc. I have not been able to figure that out.

I also have some pictures from our Glendale trip last month to forward to you. I tried doing so on the DELPHI forum, no luck.

Be well,
CC

Nice Pic

Life is too short to let the good times ride by.
Hey CC,
The wife and I were talking about someday making a run your way. When we do we will look you up. Take care and be safe. If not before Feb, we will see you then.

BZB B Careful

BZB, I know you'll love your 1300. However, be careful. Here in OK we have to be on alert for deer, so they don't become a front fender decoration. There in BZB, you'll have to be careful not to hit the illegals. Take care and ride with care.

Front fender decorations

Dog,
Thanks for the thought. I spotted several Mule deer (a buck, a doe and two fawns) as I was pulling up to my house the other night. I said hello to 'em but I don't think that they spoke English but I think that they liked the VStar as they gawked at it for a second or two before they high tailed it up the hill.
