Warning! Bucks Lowers

Philthy McNasty's picture

Recently installed Bucks Lowers following instructions provided. Nothing to it. Hardest part is determining which one goes which side. I wanted to warn anyone who has, or will install these, that the throttle side lower will put a dent in the gas tank if you turn handlebars fully to the throttle side. This is not something likely to occur in riding, however for cleaning, etc it is a definite possibility.
My lowers are as far forward (to front tire) as they can get. But if you turn the handlebar to the right, it will dent. It is the top bolt on the plastic lower that does the damage. Just be aware, mah friens!

Try this

More than likely you have the Bucks Lowers installed improperly. Mine are no where near hitting the tank. The first time I installed mine and they hit the tank I knew I had them on wrong. I simply exchanged one side to the other and all was fine.

You right, I ain't, (I already knew, my ex-wives told me!)

What I get for being left handed. They inside out! The instructions that came with, nor the ones on this site specify which way the flange on the mounting bracket is supposed to be. I can barely tell from the install photos. Thought it was only one way to go on. But it can be put on either side; the edge of the bracket, the long part with the slots for the bolts in it, can be mounted with the edge facing the front of bike (WRONG WAY), or facing the gas tank (RIGHT WAY). Easier way to say it: that the nut already mounted to the lower deflector bracket should face rear, the tank, and the bolt should face the front of the bike, right?
Minor problem except for the dimple in my tank. Forrest Gump "It happens"
Thanks Dave. Left handed non mechanical DIY's beware!

say what?

I am trying to picture how you could do this? When installed IMPROPERLY is the more narrow portion of the plexiglas/acrylic lower at the TOP?
It doesn't go that way. The wider portion should be at the top.

Edit: .... nahhhh....you had to exchange them left and right to correct didn't you?
I am going to have to go look to understand this. Sitting here in the living room this is like a mental Rubik's cube.

Inside Out

You should have seen me getting up from the desk looking at photos on the install on here, going to the window and looking at my bike. Couple times I had to go out to the bike and look at it, finally got another opinion, decided that was what was wrong, wrong one on wrong side, and no, the skinny part was still down. Think of this; The part of the mounting bracket with the slots in it which extends furthest away from the plexi, that edge of that bracket (furthest away) turns the other way so it CAN be put on opposite sides, or inside out. I wish they had come marked either left/right or front /back.

I had a fit swapping them out, wasn't as easy as the install because I had to remove both of them, then my windshield slipped off, no damage at all slid down in front of and rested on the tire. So I had to reinstall the shield with the bolts on one side. Then because I didn't have a 3rd hand, had to put one bolt (top) in partly on the side I was installing then insert the bottom.

Problem now is, seems I have even less of a reduction in buffeting than I did after the initial install, and I am not scientifically minded enough to figure out how to adjust them since the instructions indicate they are to be parallel to the shocks. I think they may need to have either the top tilted forward or back, that would put the bottom the opposite ( / or \ ) of course there too is keeping them parallel to the shocks but moving them forward or backwards. If anyone has found the ideal position, they should measure either the slots. or the Plexiglas (IE; from turn signal or windshield) & post the measurements, or take a photo of the bracket showing where on the slot the bolt is.
Dang this can be rocket surgery!
