The speakers with an mp3 player would be cheaper way to go than what I did. I am running the J&M CB2003 unit, which is a cb, intercom, and has a plug in for an external source such as an mp3. I have my Delphi XM satellite receiver plugged into it. Of course with this set up I also have to use their headsets, which seem to average about $200 each. One for me, one for her, it adds up fast. And if you have more than one helmet you wear, like I do, then you need another headset for each helmet.
Now that I think about it, I should have just gone with the speakers and my ipod.
Hey Paul, I've been using this setup for about 4 years now. It's always worked great. There are seperate volume controls for the aux input and the intercom, as well as the CB. The intercom will override the aux input, so if you have music coming in and the wife starts talking to you, it will decrease the volume of the music so you can hear the intercom. You can also adjust this feature for sensitivity.
I really like this setup, but it is expensive compared to some of the other systems available. The plus side is that there are no extra batteries that need to be charged all the time. Just plug in then helmet, adjust the volume, and go for that ride.
I purchased speakers and amp on ebay for 79 bucks. Sounds good even at 70 mph. even the wife can hear it with no problem. I also purchased a wireless remote for my ipod .
I have the Thunder Road speakers with built in amp. They work pretty good up to about 60 MPH then the wind noise seems to over power them. Also installed the in line signal booster from Boosterroo that also helps with the signal from the MP3 player. It takes me sevral rides to go through a battery in my MP3 player.
I have installed some Kuryakyn speakers and use a mp3 player with a radio turner. I have pictures of my bike on this site. Search for "Misty" one of the pictures you can see the chrome speakers on the bars. They work great. The only issue is having to recharge the mp3 player with USB from a computer. I get about 15 hours on my mp3 every charge. Not bad for local riding, but for a long trip you would need access to a computer every couple days for a recharge. I have used the computer in most hotels for a quick recharge when I take a multi-day trip.
