Fuel Injection modifications?

me262le's picture

Hi Guys and Gals,

Has anyone installed a Power Commander Dynojet or Cobra Fi2000 fuel injection enhancer on your bikes?

I have notice on my stock California model V-Star 1300 that the off idle throttle response is a bit abrupt and trying to cruse at low throttle settings (~25mph) is annoying.

I believe this is a problem for the California models only, but I just wanted to know if it can be corrected by installing one of the devices.

Thanks,

Power commander

I had vance and hines installed with power commander but I didn't get the instructions on the power commander , is there some place i can get them incase i want to take it out to try it also with it out ?

POWER COMMANDER OFF FOR GOOD

After one month of the power commander being removed from my bike,it starts easier, more mpg to 40 + just as much power as i need,I beleave it will stay off.I miss the little bit of power i gained overall but the bike seems to react better.PS FOR SALE ONE SLIGHTLY USED POWER COMMADER

Giving the Power Commander one more try

Well i've decieded to give the power commander one more shoot. The programm i had made on the dyno was not really what i wanted,I got more hp and torque but thart dreaded pooping and back firing.Even with out the p c it was still there..so i decieded to do my on thing..So i took my program added and removed fuel here and there and got rite of most of the back firing and even smothed out the lugging when the throttle was released...I'll be playing with it some more i just could not beleave the unit was not that reliable to be used..The mpg i'm not worried about right know i just want to get the best ride out of this bike..I'f this come too I just made a good bike better...ride safe

130 MILES AFTER REINSTRALL

After 130 mile trip today . Ths bike runs much better after power commander reinstall and program change no more back firing popping and the lugging is almost gone.I beleave i've i had a tach on it i could do much better for now ok.. still got 43 mpg about what i always got ,but much better ride...

fuel processor

I have read previous posts...wanted to save a buck..went with Cobra longs...strong loud pipes..(maybe too loud)..however without fuel management upgrade I'm eating gas...losing about 30-40 miles per tankful..previous bike when upgraded pipes , I installed the Cobra fuel processor and had it dyno'd...strong loud and efficient...will wait until spring, and despite Travis' comments and the beauty of different pics here, will go with a thunder air kit and a Cobra fuel processor...

more mpg

I disconnected power commander and my mpg went from 32 to 39.6 avg. on my last two long rides ..thunder air kit and cobra long shot pipes..

more mpg

Dave,
Does your bike have the low end stumble[hesitation] with the pipes and thunder air kit? My bike is stock and has had the "stumble" since new. I was about to order a cobra Fi2000 until read all the posts about aftermarket fuel mgt. problems. I would prefer to spend the bucks on the air kit that the Fi2000.

POWER COMMANDER

HI I HAVE THE SAME SET UP COBRA PIPES AND POWER COMMANDER.I HAD MINE DYNO DID WITH THE ADDITION OF THUNDER AIR KIT MY MILAGE WENT DOWN TO 35MPG. I JUST UNPLUJGGED MY COMMANDER AND FUEL IS BACK TO 43 MPG.MY MAP IS POSTED ON POWER COMMANDER ITS #10 I BELEAVE FROM BUCKS DOWN RACING IF YOU WANT TO TRY IT GIVE IT ASHOT.THERE IS ABOUT 12 MAPS ON THEIR SITE FOR OUR BIKE RIGHT NOW.
I'VE TRIED A FEW NOT MUCH LUCK..THE PIPES SOUND GOOD THEY GOT LOADER ALMOST TO LOAD.HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK

TFI Module

I installed a Techlusion TFI, the plug &play version is easy to install, it uses the stock connectors. Also disconnected the O2 sensor. After increasing the fuel/ Air ratio I noticed that the bike has a better throttle response and runs smoother, for later ad ons(kn filter& pipes) I just need to dial in the pods.
I have installed a couple of powercommanders und TFIs and prefer the TFI due to easier adjustment and less $$ , the PC is great too, more options but more expensive

power commander

i did have the power commander installed and had to have the bike put on a dyno to get it set up.I thank it was worth it i told the tech what i wanted as far as my riding style was and he set it up for that.over all i got about 8 more hp out of it and 9 lps of torque ..thottle response is much better ,when i want it in the 3 mid gears on roll on throttle..hope this helps ...ride safe

Fuel Injection modifications?

Just got e-mail from thunder for air filter power increase. the increase was just from new hi performance filter no fuel manager. He stated that the ecm on the bike made the differances up, so one was not really needed for just adding pipes and air filter...so looks like i've got to but some more toy's on the bike..I did unplug my power commander and took a short ride and I think that it ran as good with out it, I need to take a longer ride to be sure i'll wait till traffic dies down later and put her on the big road, and twist her up some....ride safe.....

Thanks for your comments David,

That's a great upgrade in power, did you have any other mods done on your bike, like new pipes or air filter? If so, what did you install?

I have been thinking about adding new pipes, but they can only be a little louder than stock, as I leave for work @ 0430 and I don't want to wake the neighbors.

POWER COMMANDER

Theres two types of fuel manager out there power commmander and one by cobra I do not know the model off hand but look into cobra.com I beleave.I bought my bike with cobra pipes and power commander on already from dealer ,now i need air intake the only one i've found for the1300 is from thunder about $300 for filter and adaptor.. the dyno they posted showed about 12 hp gain from filter repalacement. It does not say if it was filter only I have requested the info of this run.But knowing what i've found out I would not do fuel manager with out the hi performance air filter and pipes.Because you need to have fuel maps mad to set air fuel ratio.I already had my maps made and when i get my new air filter i'll have to have new dyno done again $250.i've already spent once.what i'm saying is do it all at one time or you want be happy if you don't, I know already.hope this helps ..ride safe ps tell the neighbors sorry about your luck ha ha

wasting money.

All I can add to this conversation, is the quotes (and my own proof in the pudding), that Travis (who does the design/ALL the installs @ thunderair himself, states that the 1300 does NOT need any kind of aftermarket fuel control to run properly with pipes and his air kits. He says the stock yamaha PCM does a wonderful job of 're-configuring itself to run properly with these mods.
I know personally (like MY bike), with cobra shorties on it, and the thunderair kit, I do NOT need an aftermarket fuel management system on it. While I think it would be cool if I would (for more added hp/tq), I am NOT going to throw money away unnecessarily for something I have been told, and know I don't need.
I've pulled the spark plugs out of the 1300 after the last long cruise I went on. Both plugs showing nice and tan colored (not LEAN/WHITE), like they would/should be IF it was running lean.
Maybe I got lucky? Don't know. All I know is what I know.

retracting my previous (ancient), statements

It's been a while since I posted on this subject.
It's also been quite a while since I installed my cobra C1200cl fuel dealie.
What a difference. I left the settings at 1-3-1, and started bike up. Instant difference in the way it sounded/ran/started. Took it for a test ride. LOTS more power. I began tweaking with the pots shortly thereafter. I ended up @ 1-4-2. THEN I installed smartpartz quiet baffles in my cobra shorties. Bike was THEN running a little rich. I reset the pots back to 1-3-1, and have had them there ever since. Bike knocks down (always riding double, with momma), over 50+ mpg.
I DID lose a 'feelable' amount of power with the quiet baffles, but the trade off from the NOISE to power ratio was workable.. A nice trade.
As it is , I was considering/planning on swapping out these cobra shorty pipes (which cobra doesn't even SHOW to fit on a tourer model, but MY tourer model CAME with them on it already when I purchased it.........go figure)...anyway, swapping them out for some cobra dragster pipes, but after finding out that they (the dragster versions), don't come with the port between the 2 pipes (equalizer port), I have decided not to do the swap. Plus I just love the sound of these shorties too much NOW......;>)

So, bottom line, after all my wandering thoughts here, I NOW highly recommend the cobra C1200cl fuel manager. I purchased mine from Shane @ S&S cycles. Helluva deal, helluva guy to deal with.
That's my updated story, and I'm sticking to it. :>)

Cobra Shorties

Drag
Have you ever posted a sound file of your shorties? I'm in the market for a new exhaust in the spring, and I'm wrestling between V&H and Cobras at the moment.

More oomph less mullah

This has been an eye opening topic and a very pleasant one over fuel management systems..... the need for one, or the want of one for a few more ponies, or smoother throttle response. It clears that air about the need to buy a controller or not when exhaust systems are changed out. I want to put on a new and louder exhaust system, but felt the added expense of a modulator might make it a bit beyond my reach. Sounds like it is worth the expense to buy the exhaust and see what happens. Saving a couple hundred bucks on a single modification sounds pretty good. So for this information here thank you folks for your efforts. By Spring I should be able to mount a Vance and Hines two into one without much worry. ~ Butch
