Cost Analysis ;-)

Capt J's picture

Has anyone done a cost analysis on our bike? Although I'm no accountant, I added up all the expenses for the joys of ownership: price, taxes, licensing, testing fee, insurance, accessories, gear (apparel), service, and gas. Then I divided that figure by the total miles to date, getting a current cost-ratio of $3.01 per mile . Of course, that figure will come down the more I ride, proving you save money for thrills, chills, prestige, sex-appeal, peer-envy and sheer enjoyment! My wife will appreciate that logic.

Cost

Well......Since I got her with a trade in of my 05 M50 Suzuki, and her sticker price was about 4 K (fifty miles away)l ess than the big dealers locally, I feel I got a good deal on her. About what I paid for the M50 in 05. I change the oil & filter meself. Put a tag & sticker on her. I get her serviced regular. Put a new tire on. I put gas in her. And then I ride. Well worth it, cause I get to ride her.
Roll me away

I found that the medical

I found that the medical coverage portion of the insurance was what made my insurance quote from Progressive high. Since I already have medical coverage elsewhere, I didn't have to purchase it. Also, being retired military, I have found USAA service, etc. to be exceptional for other types of insurance (life, home owners, auto, etc.).

Fuel savings

I haven't down that type of cost breakdown, but to spin the new purchase with the Mrs. I figured out how much I'm saving when I take two wheels over four.
In my truck I get about 13mpg. The bike, 43 mpg. That's 30mpg in gas savings. To make the math easy, I'll say gas is $3 a gallon.
So for every mile I ride I save a dime. As long as I ride 1500 a month when the snow aint flying, the bike pays for itself ($150 a month payment)
I racked up 9100 miles on her this last season which puts me right on track!

Venting

Ah, things are a little slow, so...Insurance. Time to vent. Insurance companies! They’re all the same as far as I’m concerned. Bottom feeders! Hope that doesn’t apply to any of the members here, but I’ve had my share of frustration with Insurance companies. As Butch has reminded us, I’m sure we all have.

I had been paying what I considered a reasonable amount to cover my home, my car and my motorcycle with the same company here in a rural area of south eastern Ontario, Canada. Then I bought “Enterprise”. I fell off my chair when I got the adjusted quote. I didn’t finance her so I asked if I could get a better rate if I kept the same reduced coverage that I had on the ‘99 Nomad which had long been paid for. That would have been about 50% less. A flat out No. So even though I’m willing to take the risk, the Insurance company, in order to ensure it gets as much out of me as possible requires that I cover the machine for 100% of the cost. Some lame excuse that this is their policy. Right! Their policy, as far as I’m concerned, is to make executives and investors rich and richer! Suck us dry so they can maintain their obscenely lavish offices and lifestyles.

I’m no fan of big government but insurance of any description cries for regulation. As has been said, they have us over a barrel and short of a revolt, what can we do? Government in these parts requires that we be insured before we can hit the road [politicians in bed with lobbyists], and screw the average Joe. Talk about a catch 22. Voters are hyped as being intelligent when it comes election time. Fact is, if anyone running for office is open and honest he or she is not likely to get elected. What does that tell us? Really makes my blood boil but again, short of revolt what are our options. Shop around we’re advised. Right! How do you spell collusion!

Anyway, now that I have that out of my system, I want you all to know that I’m really am not a whiner. Life has been good to me. Having seen real destitution and poverty, I feel blessed to have what I have. And I feel even better being a member of this fine 1300 T community.

p.s. “Enterprise” is resting comfortably out of the 14 to 16” of snow [conservative estimate] dumped on us these past few days. You southern folks don’t know what you’re missing - : ).

You just had to get me thinking about that! lol. Payments $2400, insurance $1250, maintenance, gas, & gear $1800... ($4.50 mile)

I don't understand the insurance world, or even know what some of these terms really mean - but it seems pretty high. I really have no option other than not to ride, so I just pay and try not to think about it too much. Butch, I would be interested to know what you pay just a few hours southeast of my location. ~ Kevin

My Insurance

Hello Kevin ~ Here in Northern Minnesota I have both my Jeep and Camry, my house, and my motorcycle insured through American Family. The rate alone for my motorcycle which is full coverage plus coverage for the add on's is 255 dollars a year. It is one hundred dollars more than what I paid for my 2004 650 Silverado. To insure all that own, the bike, cars and house the cost is 2500 dollars a year. That may sound reasonable, however I always thought having all my things insured under one company would entitle me to discounts, which show up on statements that I get. I have not compared my complete coverage costs with anyone else who is insuring the same things, who should also be living rurally, who should also be the same age as I am. My main complaint is that when the housing industry went bust about 4 months ago Insurance companies knew about defaults long before anything was on the news. That was last January through February. At that time I was notified by my Insurance company that I was to be re evaluted. It took 7 months of mailings I received before some gal showed up to take pictures of my home and "surroundings". Two weeks later I received a letter, rather formally stating that my rates were going to be adjusted according to my Credit Score via one of the three Credit Reporting Agencies here in the USA. As instructed I ordered my Credit Report and did not find anything wrong with anything. So I wrote letters to my agent and to the company inquiring. There was no immeadiate reply. So I called the main company headquarters and asked why my rates were going to increase. The lady said that my report had too much "Activity". Because I had sold my previous home, moved to another area 42 miles from where I lived before I lost the OPT OUT situation and became prey to insurance companies, mortgage brokers, and all sorts of places that use credit reports to determin if a person is a reasonable risk to try to contact to sell them insurance, or a home equity line of credit etc. I went ballistic, but remained a gentleman and wrote some lengthy letters protesting Insurance Companies deciding peoples costs of insurances based upon a Credit Score. About 5 to 7 years ago our Government passed a bill that allows Insurance companies to do this. This is wrong, it is discrimination, it is sad. With so much of what we hear today about identity theft we are at the mercy of our county and State governments selling our names to anybody who wants them when we buy new license tabs, apply for a marriage license, or sell and buy a new home. When we ask a government official if they do this they just say that our names are a matter of public record. Nomatter where we live we can't hide from Insurance companies, because it is mandatory to have insurance. Insurance companies are not regulated as to how or what information they use to come up with our own insurance rates. Insurance companies are in the real estate business as well. Because the bust stuck them with losses they are trying to have us policy holders bail them out for their poor investments. Screw that. It is time we revolt. Insurance companies are supposed to work for us, not the other way around. It is these same kind of "Spark Plug" investigators, snoops, and "reporting agencies" that lobby against what kinds of exhaust we may wish to put on our scooters, and even place curfews as to when motorcyles have to be off the roads at night. Yup that is coming too. Insurance companies are powerful, too powerful. Compared to government, Insurance companies are more powerful.... powerful enough to endorse candidates to win seats in high places. When stuff hits the fan they sell interests to foreign investors, so our money doesnt' stay at home anymore. It might be very possible that some middle eastern person owns your mortgage. When we do have a claim the companies don't want to pay, then they wish to increase premiums.... even if they don't pay a claim. Since my conversations with the Am Fam Corporate Headquarters I have received a notice from the "underwriters" that my rates are not going to increase. They know I am vocal. I have also been sent ballots to vote on CEO's, and yesterday received a questionalre about my insurance satisfaction from J.D Powers and Associates. I did that online and I did enter permission for them to share information with my insurance company. I stand a chance of being dropped for what I have said, and it will be very difficult for me to get insurance because insurance companies share information between themselves when it comes to someone rebelling. I feel that my insurance premiums are protecting the interests of the Insurance Company and not me. It is time to turn that around. Sorry my answer had to be this lengthy..... but I am tired, getting older and all I want to do is mind my own business and ride my scooter not being afraid if my insurance company is going to pay or not if my wife and I bang it up. There is no assurance with insurance anymore. ~ Butch

Insurance woes

Butch, I've had the odd rant on occasion myself, good for the soul. Now that you mention it, insurance costs are also less in rural Manitoba. Let's take a look at the costs for my old stomping grounds, in Minnedosa/Neepawa for example:

2007 YAMAHA XVS1300 V-STAR TOURER 2007 Rates (Rural)
Effective Mar 01, 2007
Basic Insurance Premium $928
Collision Deductible $37
Comprehensive Deductible $185
Third Party Liability $15
Total Insurance Cost $1,165
Registration Charge $69
Plate Use Charge $4
2007 Rural TOTAL $1,238 (with max discount)
2006 Rural TOTAL $1,166 (with max discount)
2007 Winnipeg TOTAL $1,747 (with max discount)

I am also curious about the insurance costs in other Provinces, how about my eastern and western Canadian compatriots? ~ Kevin

Insurance Cost

I think that it is crazy too - but unfortunately it is correct.
In BC you are required to have 3rd party liability insurance issued by the Province. For the 1300T that costs $1415 per year (-) maximum safe driving discount = $807 + $33 licence fee + $85 extra liability = $925. Then you add on comprehensive and collision (private carrier)

The system here is based on the cc's and not on the actual risk. It is very annoying to see guys on 650 sport bikes that drive like lunatics, paying far less than I do on a tourer.

There has been a push on to change the way that the rates are calculated - but so far that has not happened. And ICBC (our provincial insurance company) is already talking about rate increases for next year!
Bill

try this company

DAiryland insurance... the quoted me $394.. same coverage as geico coverage i have now For $750 a year ..star touring riding group recommends them ..Big savings and offer more then getting with the gieco..

you are going about this all wrong!

Have you thought about the cost of NOT riding!

Steve

Can you do the same for

Can you do the same for those who buy / dont buy the prepaid maintenance plan ?

I did and it cost me $999 for unlimited oil change and all other planned maintenance.

Regards

Unlimited Maintenance Plan???

I never heard about that. Is that your local dealer or Yamaha? And, for how long? That might be worth it for me 'cause I'm mechanically challenged and kinda lazy. I like to ride it, vice work on it (although adding accessories is fun). BTW, NC has to be one of the better places to ride this bike. I was stationed at Fayetteville (Springlake) and it was beautiful!
Capt J

Yeah Capt .. I believe its a

Yeah Capt .. I believe its a dealer thang .. I think most offer a similar plan. Be careful though, the servicing dealer and the purchasing dealer had a substantial difference in what they charged. ... but the plan cost me $999 bucks, it takes care of all the scheduled maintenance, unlimited oil changes ... supposedly puts me at the head of the line for service scheduling and if I buy an OEM part from the dealer they install it for free. The plan covers the bike for 3 years.

I just dont want to be under a vehicle when I get time off. I have a 06 Dodge Ram Mega cab, he wifes 06 Grand Caravan, the 96 Sebring convertible, the kids go cart two lawn mowers and a weed wacker I have to screw with ... when I get a chance to ride .. I want to ride not work on the bike :)

not to mention the cost savings.

Regards

That's A Good Deal

I think that's a good deal and I'm going to ask my dealer if he can make the same offer. Frankly, I doubt it, considering his current prices. My dealer also installs OEM accessories bought from him free, but not after market adds-ons. I wish he sold a mud flap for the front fender that required no drilling.

Yearly Insurance cost

My bike is insured with Progressive Insurance Co. and I pay $400 a year full coverage when I ride. I live in Michigan so I don't ride during the winter months. My policy provides storage coverage during the winter months. I don't know why others are paying so much when they live in cold wintery climates.

Ride Safe

more than cost

I used to only consider cost when buying ins. Then last june a van pulled out in front of me and almost killed me. It did kill my old Harley. I rode bikes for almost 40 years without a serius injury untill then.
I was lucky that my ins. man is a family friend and made sure I had max coverage. It was over 15000 dollars just for emergancy room x rays. After I went back to work the Ins. company{ Progressive} sent me a check for over 11000 dollers in lost wages not covered by my sick leave bennifits.
So my advice is to worry more about coverage than price. An old grey beard once told me " there are only two types of bikers. Those who have been down and those who are going down"

Bike Insurance

Here in Ohio I pay $236 per year for full coverage ( $300,000 ), year round riding from Progressive.
But, I'm 61 and have a clean driving record and a near perfect credit score.
My credit score also got me a 6.75% 60 month loan. This rate is low for my area, 9.5% being the norm.
Living the clean life can be a little boreing but it does have its perks.
