I am 53 yrs old, rode from since i was 15 yrs old In South America. I rode the ya-1, remember that twin-jet yamaha 100cc 1969!! oww!!!, what a lady killer. 3 bonnys (triumph bonneville), 4 hondas including dirt and cb450r,kawasaki 375 enduro, suzuki rm370 motocross(itup) and more but now that I have 1000 miles on my 1300 tourer I am ready to talk. I bought my bike new in San juan capistrano, ca and rode it back to Phoenix, az with the wife DEC 1st (420 miles of breaking in at 1 shot). Some of the bad things mentioned in blogs I noticed and corrected ( not trying to brag) during brake in. I did research before riding the bike and I had heard about jerky throttle response in 1 st gear and some lugging in 2 nd gear and I saw it myself.
I believe you break a bike or car in the way you want it to perform (my cars are all manual shift). I rode the first 60 miles purposely off the highway and only 1st to 3rd gear, i would stretch 1st and then lag 2nd and cruise 3 rd.
Then I got on the highway and constantly rode from 65 mph to 105 mph never staying at a particular speed for more than 10 seconds. Well, I didn't blow it up. The speedo reads faster than it's going (approx. 5 mph). I did the first maintenance last week at 750 miles and voila everything is good in this world, no lagging, no jerking, runs like a bat out of hell. BTW it lags (pukes, wan't to die) if I try to go 50 mph or less in 5 th gear but thats's why I have 4th.
Handlebars are good reach--I am 5' 8", 210 but 72 inch arm reach. Head buffeting starts around 80 - 85 depending on wind, I can tell where it's coming from by actually moving my left palm around. I have got to make every excuse to ride this bike , it's pure pleasure. Ride on brothers.
